Think you are above the rules? Think again!

This news submission focuses on the rules of DeviantArt, not only DA however, but also areas within DA itself, that being stock, gallery, forum and group rules for the main part.

First of all Gallery submission rules.  There have already been several news articles on this subject.. all with one main aim.  Making people understand that the guidelines for submitting a piece of work are there FOR A REASON!  Do not be surprised if your piece of work gets moved to scraps by the gallery director because you “couldn’t be bothered” to check the submission criteria…

Forum/chat/comment rules.  COMMON SENSE AND COURTESY!!  Get with the rest of the world and show a little respect for other people whom you intentionally surround yourself with on DA. (Nobody is forcing you to use this site!)  We all have feelings, we all get upset and we all have opinions, just remember that before flaming, being needlessly “critical” IE being plain nasty about somebody’s work or saying something that you wouldn’t like to hear said to you.

Group rules, (This is one thing that, of late is really beginning to get on my nerves.) What if I said…

Do not :+fav: this piece, give the original artist credit they deserve!

Surely that piece of text, is telling a person not to do something, but what confuses me is why do people STILL :+fav: these pieces? Part of me could understand if the original piece was not linked to clearly, but I have yet to come across a group gallery that does not provide a link to the original in the submission details! 30 seconds at the most to click it and :+fav: and comment the original. Clearly its not all of DA who does this, but when I look our this groups gallery and see some pieces with 30+ :+fav:s on, it does actually annoy me, and just think if it was your art, and your one of these people who fail to read the bit that says 'Do NOT :+fav: this piece, I’m sure you would be angry.

Secondly, also relating to groups is where people do not fully read journal entries and miss out on half the information that’s there. Not wanting to seem rude here, but it really is annoying when people keep complaining that they are not listed in the member lists, especially when it states in the journal that if people have problems, they should note the group about it, and not leave comments on the journal. Is this a matter of people disregarding our attempt to make things easier on the whole, or are people just being stupid?

Come on folks, make sure you read the WHOLE entry, help us help you, and this goes for EVERY group, every journal!  Just take that little extra time to make sure!

Please note - DA does not officially recognise or have support for groups/clubs, please remember this before requesting group/club specific help from the helpdesk.

Now we move on to people ignoring stock artists' rules. Stock artists are artists too, and they deserve complete and utter respect for what they do. If you use their stock it doesn’t take much time to let them know, and for heavens sake, give them a mention in your deviation description. Its only fair, they are providing us all with something for FREE, the least we can do it give them their due credit. I already know of one stock artist who shut her account down, because people were downloading her stock packs, and she had alot more downloads that she has deviations being made. Don’t let this continue to happen, or else DA is going to lose ALL its stock providers, just because a select few can't be bothered to take that little extra time to say..

'Thanks to : dev..... : for their stock [link].'

If you can’t be bothered to do it, copy and paste the above, think of it as a template for you lazy people ;)

I could go on, about using stock outside of DA when the providers state not to, and not checking to see if your need prints permission from them BEFORE posting a deviation with stock in it a print.

Remember to read each individual stock providers rules, they are not all the same!

I am not going to go into the general policies of DA, because I have already gone on quite a lot. If you are unfamiliar with those, here are a few links you might (or might not) recognise…

DA FAQ

ALL DA POLICIES

DA ETIQUETTE POLICY

DA SUBMISSION POLICY

DA HELPDESK (ONLY for when the FAQ and POLICY do not help!)

DA is a community, if we don’t pull together and show each other respect then its all going to fall apart, basically remember that 'courtesy is contagious' and all it takes it that little extra time, to give credit, or read stock/group rules.

Thanks for reading, and I hope that this entry makes some people aware of the problems that disregarding rules creates for everyone.  Feel free to link to this article in your journals and help spread to word!

Thanks for writing this. :3 I see the "Don't fave this here... But you did anyway..." thing going on all the time.
I also feel for the stock artists. I read the rules for all stock before downloading, I never thought that someone wouldn't. But then again so few people seem to read the artist comments, or at least ignore them.
:3 I'm adding this to my faves because I hope it'll help someone come across it. After all, that's how I found this.

SO TRUE! I've heard of many stories of other clubs that have been shut down because of people that think they're "avobe it all". And even in one of the clubs that I'm in had a problem with their deviations being favorited, not the person's original, and not removing it until the club had to post a journal and at least 10 people from the club posted on his page about it. What's wrong with some of these people? D:

I run a club (~EverythingAboutProse) and we are lucky enough not to have that problem.. the worst has been comments when I forgot to disable them ^^; silly me! One problem we have though is that we have a few members who submit/enter competitons/vote... anyone have this problem or have any suggestions on how to remedy it?

yes! people need to read! the words are there for a reason: they're instructions? what do you do with them? follow them! i run a club and i'm just sick of having to note every member to please favorite on the original - i've given up on that, though just to be fair, i guess i should start again, huh? -__-

hm, after reading this, i think dA would be a good place to start practicing your courtesy. ;) we're all gonna have to interact with people, whether online or in real life, so be nice to them and they shall be nice to you! ... i'm starting to ramble incoherently here. excuse me.

This was very interesting, and so true. Especially the part about clubs/groups, and how people post all their problems in comments and not notes as they are asked to. Very annoying.

Well written article, I hope people listen to it!

I don't think most people are stuid. I think it's usually a matter of people not taking the time to read everything. They seem to skim over things if they visit other clubs or FAQs a lot. (As if "I've read all this before... It probably says the same thing as in all the other clubs I've seen.") It's usually not people disregarding rules on purpose. Most people follow the rules IF they read them.

Yeah, but people should be reading everything, like it was mentioned about stock.. people tend to assume they can make their piece into a print because some alow it.. However not all do..
Differant things have differant rules, this is so in real life.. Differant countries > Differant rules and law, i dont see why people expect it to be differant here.. Ocourse the scale is alot smaller, but it should be considered the same.
Differant Group > Differant Rules
Differant Stock > Differant Rules
etc etc..

I know, its like they just dont care.. Luckily i have been here long enough to remember when DA was VERY community based, but it didnt last long.. I think ive been hear near 2 years..

Its just slowly becoming a collection of people trying their best to get page views, and more :+fav:'s than other people... and thats not what art is about..

This is a great article. It seriously bothers me when an artist asks for no faves, and...what do you know? They get like 400 faves. A lot of people don't read the artist comment boxes either.
Thank you for the article. It's truly great. :]

Its like, if you ask for something NOT to be :+fav:'d you get more :+fav:'s than you would have done had you not said, dont do it..

Im sure one piece in our groups gallery has move :+fav:'s than its origional, if i was the creator of that piece, i wouldnt be happy..

Makes you think, are people really lazy? Or they just dont care.. or is it something else?

*sigh*
And im glad you like the Article :aww:

Gah! The amount of people who fave on the stuff in our club is annoying isn't it? :shakefist: But most of the people I told to go and fave the original did so, I suppose we can forgive them. For now. ;)
Snazzy news article Sharky! More people need to read it! I'll link it in my journal! Not that many people read my journal but what the hey, every little helps! Like Tescos! :giggle:

Suggestion for future implementation: We have the ability to turn off comments, why not the same to turn off Favorites? that way groups could have this turned off automatically, because come on, you really expect people to READ Rules??? and then FOLLOW them??? shhesshh you expect a lot (j/k of course).. serioulsy though, turning it off would be a great feature..

glad you agree with me, i really hope people read it to. But the people who tend to read the news are the ones who care about the community, this kinda thing needs to be posted in club journals, for members to read.. make them aware, we are definately going to put it in our journal. Just to help make them aware.
